The importance of this situation has been recognized by Minster Ong Ye Kung, who stated that “The youth of today face starkly different mental health challenges compared with those before them“.
He illustrates this by drawing attention to how new forms of challenges can arise through social media and the wider internet, which could be too much for a young child to handle, before asserting that “There has to be a whole new literacy other than numeracy and language literacy… and that is digital literacy.”

#CodingLabStudents: Lucas Tang, 12, and Louis Tang, 10, Henry Park Primary School
We invited 2 passionate brothers, Lucas and Louis Tang, who first began their coding journey with us 4 years ago when they were 9 and 6 years old respectively. They have since accelerated across our S100 Python for teens, and are already pursuing our S200 Electives course at the ages of 12 and 10. Lucas will also be commencing his studies at Hwa Chong Institution in 2023.

We are thrilled to extend our heartfelt congratulations to our exceptional students, Chen-Xuan, Emrys and Prabir, who have achieved remarkable accomplishments in this year’s Hwa Chong Infocomm Challenge 2023! 🏆 Chen-Xuan, Emrys, and Prabir have each earned the prestigious Platinum award, the highest honour bestowed upon the top 1.5% of participants.

Did you know that 12-year-olds in Singapore spend about 6 hours on their electronic devices each day?
We’re in the Fourth Industrial Revolution where everything technology is found in every aspect of our lives, and the digital world is now our children’s playground. Everything we see around us is being automated, for instance, that chatbot you’re typing to or the ordering kiosks at your favourite bubble tea shop. Isn’t it exciting that our children get to be part of something like Big Data and Artificial Intelligence?
International Coding Showcase 2022 Summed Up
Coding Lab’s annual International Coding Showcase (ICS) is a collaboration with Coding Lab Japan, designed to provide a platform for our students aged 7 to 18 to present their remarkable coding projects. Our students get the opportunity to showcase their own exceptional projects, done in Scratch, App Inventor or Python, and share their brilliance with a global audience.

Here at Coding Lab, we aim to nurture future leaders in technology and it is always exciting to celebrate our fantastic students’ achievements. Today, we have Tan Zheng Kai, 12, with us, who has done us proud by achieving a Gold Award at the Hwa Chong Infocomm Challenge (HCIC) 2022!
His coding journey began when he was 10 years old, so it is even more amazing to see him progress so much and clinch an award in this highly reputable competition in just 2 years! Let us now hear from Zheng Kai directly about his coding journey.

Starting off with a #TechFact, did you know that computer pioneer Alan Turing was born on June 23, 1912? A genius in his field, he helped crack the "unbreakable" Enigma code, shortening the war by 2 years!
Turing is best-known today for his work on the idea of a "universal computer," one that could run any program. This has since become known as a "Turing Machine."
